On paper it was a running DAF that only needed painting and finishing. In reality the right front wing sat too high because of poor welding, and repairing it would have been an enormous job. So I made one car out of two: a sound body from Bleiswijk, fitted with the engine and Variomatic from my first DAF. Along the way it received the disc brakes and Variomatic from the 66, and seats from a Volvo 66. The result is a 1976 DAF 46 Super Luxe that I drive every day. Valuer Jan-Erik Plettenburg rated it condition 3, with a valuation of €5,000.

How do you become self-employed with your own workshop at eighteen, without a technical background? In this interview I talk about how it all began: doing jobs with my father, a Burton plan that turned out to be too expensive, a DAF and learning to weld. Then came the Volvos, the bodywork for customers and eventually the rebuild work. The article also shows why I love this work so much. I never expected it to become my profession, but every job that comes in proves it was the right choice.

A 1970 Volvo 144 Grand Luxe, sold new in Sweden and fitted with the standard sunroof. A car like this tells its history to anyone who looks closely: a grille from an earlier model year, doors and a gear lever from the 1972 model year, traces of an earlier refurbishment. In the column De Taxatie (The Valuation), Jan-Erik Plettenburg explains how he reaches his verdict. He recorded condition 3–4 and a valuation of €6,000, with some welding on the rear wings still planned.
