Restoration and Rebuild Services

Everything I do, I do meticulously — from the first weld seam to the final adjustments. Quick little jobs therefore soon become proper projects. My work focuses on two things: returning a classic car to a condition better than new, and the specialist rebuilding of mechanical components — the heart of every driving experience. Below is an overview of what I specialise in.

Hand feeling a bare-metal body panel during prep work

The complete process from A to Z: from dismantling to welding and painting, assembly and mechanical set-up. Handing it over does not mean being left out: I keep you personally informed of every step. Along the way I am happy to suggest improvements that make the car truly usable, always with respect for the character of the vehicle. Service does not end when the keys are handed over; a carefree handover is a standard part of my process.

Meticulous work with many small parts that together form the basis of a well-running engine. As a specialist in Zenith-Stromberg carburettors, among others, I handle both the mechanical and the cosmetic side, using original rebuild parts and a finish of your choice. Including advice on fitting and tuning.

Open gearbox with selector forks and gears during a rebuild

The driving experience of a classic car lies in how the gearbox works — the link between driver and drivetrain. I always start with a thorough diagnosis, because a rebuild is not always necessary, and I prefer to test directly in the car itself. As standard I renew the bearings, gaskets and oil. Synchromesh rings or gears only if the condition of the gearbox requires it.

Crown wheel and pinion of a differential, backlash measured with a dial gauge

The link between engine power and the wheels. In practice often underestimated, both for maintenance and for roadholding. As standard, bearings, oil seals and gaskets are replaced and I set everything up to factory specifications, including the specialist adjustment of backlash and preload. After the rebuild you will receive advice on the running-in period.

About Van Vliet

At the age of 18 I turned my passion for classic cars into my profession. I was trained by the generation that developed this knowledge and these skills at a time when these cars were still new. I proudly carry that same expertise into my projects. My specialisation deliberately lies in the drivetrain and the bodywork around it — rebuilds, restoration and bespoke work.

Specialisation

My specialisation focuses on restoring the driving characteristics and solidity of your classic to their former glory. I ensure this through knowledge from a network of marque specialists and rare, original factory documentation. Not dogmatically keeping everything original on principle, but not modernising without respecting the character of the car either.

How I Work

Every project starts with a thorough intake: photographs of the current condition, the story behind the car, your expectations and a realistic schedule. You are kept informed throughout the process with updates and photographs. We record the result in a clear dossier — ideal for reference and as valuable supporting evidence for valuations or a sales file.
